SPC Flooring
SPC Flooring – Waterproof Rigid Core Flooring
SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring is a modern alternative to traditional hardwood, laminate and ceramic tiles, combining exceptional durability with realistic decorative finishes and straightforward installation.
At Wet Wall Works, our range of waterproof SPC flooring offers a practical solution for busy family homes, kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and suitable commercial environments.
Manufactured using a dense composite core containing limestone and PVC, SPC flooring is designed to provide strength, dimensional stability and resistance to everyday wear. Unlike traditional flexible luxury vinyl flooring, its rigid construction helps maintain a firm, stable surface underfoot.
Available in a selection of wood-effect planks, stone-effect tiles and herringbone designs, SPC flooring allows you to achieve the appearance of natural materials without the maintenance associated with genuine timber or stone.
Why Choose SPC Flooring?
SPC flooring offers several advantages over traditional flooring materials, making it increasingly popular for both domestic and commercial installations.
-
100% Waterproof Core: Unlike traditional laminate or timber flooring, SPC's composite core does not absorb water or swell when exposed to everyday moisture.
-
Rigid Core Construction: The dense limestone-based core provides excellent dimensional stability and strength.
-
Scratch & Wear Resistance: A protective wear layer helps withstand regular foot traffic, furniture movement and everyday household activity.
-
Realistic Wood & Stone Finishes: Choose from natural oak, walnut, marble, slate, concrete and decorative herringbone patterns.
-
Click-Lock Installation: Most SPC flooring features an interlocking fitting system, reducing the need for adhesives or nails.
-
Integrated Underlay Options: Selected products include pre-attached underlay to improve convenience and help reduce impact noise.
-
Low Maintenance: Easy-clean surfaces require no sanding, polishing or traditional wood treatments.
-
Underfloor Heating Compatibility: Many SPC ranges are suitable for approved underfloor heating systems, subject to the manufacturer's temperature limits.
-
Residential & Commercial Applications: Selected commercially rated products are suitable for offices, shops and other high-traffic environments.
Although the SPC core is waterproof, the flooring does not automatically create a watertight barrier across the entire room. Subfloor moisture and water entering perimeter joints must still be considered.

How to Install SPC Click Flooring
One of the main advantages of SPC Click Flooring is its straightforward installation. Most products use an interlocking tongue-and-groove mechanism, allowing planks or tiles to connect securely without being permanently fixed to the subfloor.
This is known as a floating floor installation, where the flooring sits above the prepared subfloor and remains free to accommodate normal expansion and contraction.
Step 1 – Prepare the Subfloor
Before installation, ensure the existing subfloor is clean, dry, firm, stable and sufficiently flat.
Remove loose debris, repair damaged areas and correct uneven surfaces using a suitable levelling compound where necessary.
Although SPC flooring has a rigid core, it should not be used to conceal significant subfloor imperfections. Uneven surfaces can place unnecessary stress on the locking joints and affect the finished floor.
Step 2 – Acclimatise the Flooring
Allow the SPC flooring to adjust to the temperature of the room before installation, following the manufacturer's specified acclimatisation period.
Keep the flooring stored flat in suitable indoor conditions and inspect all planks or tiles for damage, colour differences or manufacturing defects before fitting.
Step 3 – Check the Underlay
Some SPC flooring includes integrated underlay, meaning a suitable backing is already attached to each plank or tile.
Where integrated underlay is fitted, additional underlay should not be installed unless specifically approved by the flooring manufacturer.
For products without integrated underlay, use only a compatible underlay where required by the fitting instructions.
Step 4 – Plan the Flooring Layout
Measure the room and determine the most suitable direction for laying the planks or tiles.
Wood-effect SPC flooring is often installed along the length of a room, while stone-effect tiles may be arranged in staggered patterns.
Plan the layout to avoid excessively narrow pieces along the walls and ensure the end joints are staggered according to the manufacturer's requirements.
Step 5 – Connect the Click-Lock Joints
SPC flooring generally uses one of two interlocking systems:
Angle-Angle Click System: The plank is inserted into the adjoining plank at an angle before being lowered into position, securing the locking mechanism.
Drop-Lock System: The long edge is connected before the short end is lowered into place. Some systems require a specific tapping technique or approved installation tool to secure the joint.
The exact fitting method depends on the locking profile. Never force the joints together or strike them directly with a hammer, as this can damage the connection.
Step 6 – Leave Expansion Gaps
SPC flooring must be installed with the appropriate expansion gap around walls, door frames, pipes and other fixed structures.
These gaps allow the floating floor to respond to changes in temperature without buckling or placing pressure on the locking joints.
The required gap varies by manufacturer and room dimensions. Fixed kitchen units and heavy built-in furniture must not restrict a floating floor unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
Step 7 – Cut & Finish the Flooring
Measure and mark the final planks or tiles carefully before cutting them using the method recommended for the product.
Once installation is complete, remove the spacers and conceal the perimeter expansion gaps using suitable skirting boards, scotia or finishing profiles.
Ensure the flooring remains free to move beneath the trims. In bathrooms and other moisture-prone rooms, follow the manufacturer's specific guidance for protecting exposed edges and perimeter joints.
These installation principles are supported by the fitting guidance published by Karndean and Quick-Step. Exact acclimatisation periods, expansion gaps, joint methods and subfloor tolerances vary between collections.

SPC Flooring vs LVT Flooring – What's the Difference?
Both SPC and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring offer realistic decorative finishes, durability and straightforward maintenance, but their construction differs.
SPC Flooring: Features a dense, rigid composite core designed for additional stability and strength. It is particularly appealing for busy households, kitchens, bathrooms and suitable commercial environments where a firm, waterproof flooring product is preferred.
LVT Flooring: Typically features a more flexible vinyl construction, providing a slightly softer feel underfoot. LVT is available in glue-down and click-fit formats and offers a wide selection of realistic wood and stone designs.
The choice depends on your preferred installation method, subfloor conditions, comfort requirements and the technical specifications of the individual product.
Caring for Your SPC Flooring
SPC flooring is designed to be easy to maintain. Regular sweeping or vacuuming with a suitable hard-floor attachment removes grit and loose dirt, while occasional damp mopping with a manufacturer-approved, pH-neutral cleaner helps keep the surface looking its best.
Wipe up spills promptly, use protective pads beneath furniture and avoid abrasive cleaning products or excessive heat.
